Improving Birth Outcomes in Baltimore City

Unfortunately infant deaths are too common in Baltimore City. As a matter of fact, more than 120 infants under the age of one died in Baltimore in 2009. To fight these grim statistics, CareFirst partnered with the Baltimore City Health Department and the Family League of Baltimore City, Inc, to start the city-wide B’more for Healthy Babies program.

Many infant deaths are preventable. With this in mind, CareFirst and its partners hope to improve the survival of all Baltimore babies through education, community outreach and media exposure. Initially, twelve Baltimore communities have been targeted to improve maternal and child health through the following high impact services:

  • Primary Health Care in a Medical Home
  • Obstetric Care
  • Home Visiting Drug and Alcohol Treatment
  • Intervention for Domestic Violence
  • Mental Health Care
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Family Planning
  • Nutrition Support
  • Breastfeeding Promotion

Critical goals of the program include:

  • a 10% reduction in premature births and low birth weight babies
  • a 30% decline in infant deaths during sleep

The primary goal for the B’more for Healthier Babies program - healthier births and healthier babies for our Baltimore community.
